Welcome to 1740 Bar & Kitchen
Set alongside the peaceful banks of the Lancaster Canal, 1740 Bar & Kitchen is rooted in history while thoughtfully designed for modern, relaxed dining. The building dates back to 1740, when it was originally established as a working mill, forming an important part of the area’s industrial heritage. Today, that rich past is still evident in the character of the building, carefully preserved and complemented by considered modern upgrades.
Sitting at the heart of Pyes Mill, the 1740 bar and kitchen has been created first and foremost as a welcoming space for locals and visitors alike, somewhere you can drop in for a relaxed drink or settle in to enjoy honest, hearty local food made with locally sourced produce, all in a calm canal-side setting.
Our focus is on making everyone feel comfortable and welcome, whether you are calling in for a drink, enjoying a meal, staying overnight, or celebrating a special occasion.
Honest Local Food, Comforting and Familiar
The kitchen is led by Scott Young, a chef with over 30 years’ experience across Scotland, the Lake District, and the South of England. His cooking champions comfort food and familiar local dishes, prepared with care, consistency, with a subtle twist. By working closely with local suppliers, the menus celebrate quality produce and flavours that feel reassuring, generous, and satisfying.

1740 Bar & Kitchen is designed to suit every occasion. Guests are welcome to pop in for a relaxed drink, enjoy a leisurely lunch or dinner overlooking the canal, dine as part of an overnight stay, or bring friends and family together to mark special moments.
We are open seven days a week, offering relaxed food and drinks throughout the week, including traditional Sunday lunches.
Dog Friendly and Community Focused
We are proudly dog friendly, welcoming guests to enjoy the peaceful canal-side surroundings with their dogs. Pyes Mill w also run our own Sunday walking groups, giving locals and visitors the opportunity to explore the surrounding area before or after stopping in for food or drinks.
